Zoom Your Way To A Brighter Smile
After years of drinking two coffees a day and some seriously fading teeth colour, I thought it was timely to visit my dentist to check out my teeth whitening options.
I’ve always been a bit sceptical on whitening my teeth, however I felt I’d put a lot of time and effort into having nice teeth (no fillings yet!) that I might as well show them off. My dentist, Dental on Clarendon, assured me that the Zoom treatment would achieve the results that I was after – natural white teeth that gave my smile the lift it needed!
After the initial consultation, I was led to the dentist chair and given a preliminary teeth clean before the procedure started. Next it was putting on the mouth widening guard, which opened up my mouth so the Zoom treatment was able to focus solely on my teeth.
The treatment in itself was an experience. Lying flat in the dentist chair, looking up at the ceiling watching TV while the machine took care of the rest. To get the ultimate white smile, it was recommended I undertake 4x 15 minute whitening sessions. In the middle of each, there’s a quick clean and reset before you go again. And voila, you’re done! The average cost of the treatment is between $600 – $900.
At No Paparazzi Man, we were fortunate to have Philips Zoom Ambassador and Cosmetic Dentist at Quality Dental, Dr Luke Cronin provide some of his top tips for getting a healthy white grin! Here’s what Dr Cronin had to say:
1. Get yourself an electric toothbrush
Electric toothbrushes (a good option is the Philips Sonicare range) are clinically proven to remove more plaque than manual toothbrushes, delivering visibly cleaner, healthier and whiter teeth. Make sure you brush your teeth morning and night, and change your electric toothbrush head approximately every three months to maintain its effectiveness.
You should floss your teeth at least once a day to remove any food particles and plaque in between the teeth that your toothbrush can’t reach.
3. Teeth Whitening
It is an excellent way to instantly brighten your smile and is suitable for just about everyone. Having your teeth whitened at the dentist will deliver a superior whitening result that’s more predictable and limits sensitivity. With the Phillips In-Chair Zoom Whitening system you can whiten teeth up to 8 shades in around one hour under the supervision of a dental professional. At-home whitening kits provide a great cheaper alternative but generally require multiple applications due to the lower concentration of the active whitening agent, hydrogen peroxide.
4. Review your diet
If your teeth are stained take time to review your diet. There are certain stain-causing food and drinks that you may not be aware of. Regular consumption of coffee, tea, red wine, sports drinks, berries and tomato sauce can all stain the tooth’s enamel over time. A professional clean at the dentist at least every 6 months will remove stains on your teeth and leave your smile looking brighter and healthier.
5. Give up smoking!
Even if you only consider yourself a social smoker the effects of nicotine on your teeth are noticeable and are ageing your smile. Nicotine stains the enamel, causing it to prematurely yellow in colour. The best way to counter the yellowing effects of smoking is to remove the cause, not only will the staining resolve, your general oral health will improve as well.
A special thanks to Philips Zoom Whitening, Fleishman PR for arranging the treatment, Dr Luke Cronin for providing his top tips and Dental on Clarendon for being very accommodating in arranging the treatment. See some photos of my experience below.
