Inside the Birdcage marquees for the Melbourne Cup Carnival
It’s where all the big local and international names hangout during the Melbourne Cup Carnival, the glitz and glamour of the Birdcage will you have drooling for more at the decadence of the VIP marquees.
This year’s newcomers to the arena are Kennedy, a luxury watch& jewellery boutique and 1 Oliver Street, a VRC members venue. So let’s take a look at the main marquee players in 2017:
It seems that each and every year there’s a competition to take it to the next level. Just when you thought G.H. Mumm couldn’t top last year’s pool party efforts, well they certainly proved us wrong this year.
Enter a luxury 59 foot motor yacht out the front of the 2 story marquee, with free flowing brut and rose champagne and canapes to die for, it’s definitely one of the places to be seen over the Carnival. Not to mention some great music and the likes of superstar sprinter Usain Bolt spinning the decks at the end of the day, you’re sure to have a great time here.
Walking into the Emirates marquee you get the sense of a luxury first class airline lounge. The interior has been styled perfectly and the huge deck overlooks the finishing straight so VIPs can watch all the action without having to head out to the rails.
This year Emirates has bought its First Class Lounge Bar from its A380 plane into the marquee, so guests can get a real feeling of what’s it’s like to be entertained on a First Class flight. There’s a range of top shelf spirits to choose from, french champagne flowing and beautiful nibbles and snacks, such as chicken & lettuce sandwiches to keep you fuelled throughout your flight.
During the Carnival there’s performances depicting a range of cinema classics such as Beauty and The Beast, The Matrix and The Great Gatsby, as part of the airline promoting it’s in flight entertainment.
Derby Day guests included Karl Stefanovic and Yasmin Yarbrough, The Hon. Julie Bishop MP, Rachel Griffiths, Olympia Valance, Fiona Faulkner, Roxy Jacenko.
Other guests included Elyse Knowles and Josh Barker, Matt Preston, Marvounee Hazel, Jeremy Howe, Olympians Mack Horton and Gregorio Paltrinieri, Jack Viney, Rhys Muldoon, Tim Robards and Anna Heinrich, Jonathan Brown, Scherri-Lee Biggs, Rebecca Maddern, Brooke Hogan, Maria Tutari and Israel Folau, Justin and Chantelle O’Neill.
It’s truly a once-off to experience the opulence and service that is known as Emirates.
Sensis was the new kid on the block last year and in 2017 they’ve backed it up with some quality entertainment that will get the phones filming non-stop. The beautiful and talented Natalie Imbruglia sang on Derby Day to a crowd of guests (and fans) that reminisced so many good times in the past to her huge global hit, Torn.
The interior is relaxed with seating around the perimeter of the marquee and a round stage in the centre, so VIPs can focus on the performances of big names such as Natalie and on Cup day, Taylor Dane.
Other guests included Sensis Digital Social & Style Ambassador Tess Shanahan, Kylie Auldist, Georgia Love & Lee Elliott, former Bachelor Sam Wood, Steph- Claire Smith & Josh Miller and channel 9 favourite Brodie Harper.
With great music and a fun atmosphere, Sensis will no doubt be on of the must-visits during the Carnival.
One thing I love about the Bar Schweppes marquee is its relaxed atmosphere. Upon arrival at its glittering media wall, you can head over to the Make-It-Yourself Cocktail bar and select from a range of ingredients including mint, basil, chilli, lime, strawberry and orange to name a few and put together your own custom cocktail. Alternatively, you can choose from one of their 6 house cocktails from the Cocktail Menu, with the Flemington Fling the official cocktail of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Bar Schweppes’ food has always been consistently good and always flowing, so you won’t be left hungry at the end of the day. With a mid afternoon snack of lemon gel, black olive powder filled lamb fillet, grilled zucchini, green elk and pickled celery salad, followed up by a passionfruit meringue dessert, you definitely have your taste buds zinging!
This year’s theme for ‘Palazzo Lavazza’ saw Neale Whitaker take inspiration based on a luxury hotel lobby. In styling the interior, Neale told us that he always likes to start with the tiles. Once the Italian tiles were selected, the rest came together from there.
The bright blue wall sees a beautiful mural by Melbourne artist Robert Doble that tells a thousand words. It’s also the first year that Lavazza has had a raised level, with 3 steps leading up to a second tier wear guests can enjoy the comfort of the lounges and some down time before heading back to the dance floor beats of DJ Tommy O.
Adam D’Sylva is the main chef again this year and three other chefs have joined him – Giorgio Angele, Buddha Lo and Gerald Achille, to up the game in the food stakes. The Lavazza baristas are pumping out lattes all day and if you’re lucky enough to be present during a round of espresso martinis, your day just got even better!
The new comer to this year’s Birdcage is Kennedy, a luxury watch & jewellery boutique selling their own label watches, as well as leading international luxury brands Rolex, IWC, Patek Phillipe, Cartier, Tudor, Graff and Girard-Perregaux. They have several stores in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth under the Kennedy brand, Rolex and Graff.
The interior is based on an upscale luxury hotel lobby, while there’s an outdoor deck for guests to enjoy a drink in the sun. Inside you’ll find a range of their luxury watches on display in glass cabinets while your entertained with snake charmers and burlesque dancers. Special guests on Derby Day included Melissa George and Rachel Griffiths, while Carnival ambassadors Robyn Lawley and James Roberts will make you feel right at home amongst the luxury environment.
